A Gift That Gives Back: C. McCollister Evarts ’53 Creates a Scholarship for Future Generations

C. McCollister Evarts ’53

In a generous gesture that will support future generations of students, C. McCollister “Mac” Evarts ’53 has established a charitable remainder trust to fund a new scholarship at Colgate University. The gift will provide a steady stream of income for his family for a specified period, after which the remaining funds will be transferred to Colgate to support students in perpetuity. This type of gift allows donors to support the University while also providing for their loved ones.

Reflecting on his time at Colgate, Mac recalls how the University's rigorous academics provided him with “excellent preparation for Medical School.” A National War Memorial Scholar himself, Mac understands the transformative power of scholarship support. He and his late wife, Nancy, whom he met as a first-year medical student at the University of Rochester, always believed in the importance of giving back.

As a physician, Mac spent his career caring for patients, from his work as a pioneering orthopedic surgeon specializing in total joint replacement to his leadership roles as dean and CEO of several major medical centers. His life's work, like this gift, has been defined by a deep commitment to others. Now in retirement, he enjoys woodworking and spending time with his 11 grandchildren — a new chapter in a life well lived.

Mac hopes his gift will inspire other Colgate alumni to consider planned gifts, noting that Colgate’s Office of Planned Giving helped him structure his gift in a way that aligned with his philanthropic goals. Mac also appreciates the University’s vision of expanded financial aid through the Colgate Commitment. "Colgate remains a remarkable institution that continues to grow in size and reputation," he said. “So many talented applicants would benefit from scholarship support from alumni like me.”
